In a sentence, KOREA is BTS. I stared at this for a while and decided to let it live. I am not a big fan of BTS. Even I cannot follow any lyrics of their songs. They are simply too FAST! I feel dizzy and uneasy when I watch their fast-moving dances.
But in a sense this kind of dynamism is what attracts people’s attention to Korea at present, I cannot but agree that BTS phenomenon should be the true representation of Korea. AS seemingly BTS emerged on the global stage from nowhere, Korea is also in the sudden limelight. But it is needless, to say that there is no such thing as sudden success. We all know there must be long and painstaking period before overnight stardom.
Korea is really an unprecedented example, which turned from an imperialism’s victim to a member of OECD, from a recipient of international Aids to a donor of it. Just over 70 years after completely devastated by Korean War, what happened to this small far-eastern country? Some people are trying to describe it using a term like Miracle on Han River.
But is it ok to call the accumulation of enormous number of people’s exertion and sacrifice just a miracle? Korea is fast and ever-changing dynamic society. In Korea there’s no guarantee today’s new thing could be still hot tomorrow. This tendency has a deep root. Thus, I want to present the word, Korea as an indication of a process rather than a name of country. I dare say being in Korea means participating in that process.
What can Korea offer to you? Grand time-enduring historical edifices? You’d better go to Rome or China. Taking pictures against wonderful nature? I am sorry but Korean is a small and simple country, territorially speaking. What makes Korea unique is no other than people. You will find out exciting to see the way of their living, the place they live in, and the timeline where they are on.
You would never get bored in Korea, because you will be Korean temporarily and you are not allowed any leeway of boredom. I really hope that you would also discover the charm of Korea that makes people keep coming back.
